Much like the evaportation/wave size problem of some time back ten miles on a washboarded road would actually be more than ten miles thus reducing m/g if the driver naively assumes that because point A is exactly ten miles from point B on a map the distance from point A to point B on that washboard road is actually ten miles. This, of course, assumes the wheels of the vehicle remain in contact with the earth at all times.
